A little bit about Lola
Lola Culsán is a half-Spanish former stand-up comic, born in Jamaica, who teaches in north-west London. A passionate year-round outdoor swimmer, she can often be found braving the waters of Hampstead Heath.
Together with John Weller, she has spent years uncovering hidden swimming spots and wild landscapes across Europe and beyond. Their bestselling book Wild Swimming Spain (2016) revealed tranquil reservoir beaches, magical waterfall grottos and secret river pools. In 2019, they embarked on a year-long adventure, circumnavigating the entire coast of Spain and the Balearic Islands in their VW campervan to research Hidden Beaches Spain (2021).
Closer to home, they explored the south-east of England to create Outdoor Swimming London (2022), a guide to the 140 best wild swims, lakes and lidos within an hour of the capital.
Most recently, in 2024, they set off in their Peugeot Boxer campervan to explore Morocco’s breathtaking mountains, deserts and coastline. Over five months, they travelled through remote landscapes, experienced Morocco’s rich cultural diversity and encountered the warm generosity of its people. Meanwhile, their son, Danny Weller, an Arabic speaker, followed the surf trail—interspersed with mountaineering and canyoning—by bus, taxi and hitchhiking.
Their latest book, Wild Guide Morocco, was published on 1st March 2025.
